Modern Day Nineveh: Is America Hungry for God?

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Matthew 5:6 NIV

Have any of you caught the Bible Miniseries yet? It is FABULOUS and it has become an instant hit much to the surprise of Hollywood. This brings back to mind The Passion of the Christ. A New York Times reporter printed this in a 2003 critique “I can’t imagine it being anything other than a flop in America.”

Then it surpassed the Lord of the Rings!

If you have been watching your TV guide you probably notice that the miniseries has jump-skipped History Channel and has been appearing on channels like WE TV and even Lifetime!

It is so clear that America is HUNGRY for God! People want to know who Jesus was. They want to SEE Him for themselves. If Jesus “sells” why are there so many rated R movies out there – Especially when records have proven that G movies sell far better?

My friends Leah and Karen are BIG Duck Dynasty fans. The family featured ends every show with a prayer around the table. They are very openly Christian and make no apologies for it.

Instant hit.

So often we are compared to Sodom and Gomorrah, but wouldn’t it make more sense that we are a Nineveh in disguise? God longs for His people to know Him intimately.  People always talk about how far we have strayed from God . . . but when presented with the opportunity to “go tell Nineveh”, just like Jonah, the world sits on its hands.  It was Einstein who said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

Jonah had the “too far gone” mentality. Is the mentality that America has today? God wanted the people to remember Him. He went as far as to put Jonah inside the whale! And even still, Jonah was NOT happy about telling people who God was. Was He too proud . . . or perhaps too comfortable? I think the latter had a lot to do with it.

We all know how the story ends. Jonah goes. Nineveh listens. They were, just as God predicted, hungry for Him after all. The people changed. It is one of the most retold stories of redemption the whole world over.

Look at the commercials on your television right now. Movies like Spring Breakers and the like of it . . . we say this is our reality. But if Nineveh’s reality could be changed by ONE man . . . what could we do together? I think we could change a lot. I think our reality would look a lot differently. Our children might be safer. Our world might be more peaceful. Our hearts might be more at rest.

What do you think? Could we change the world if we only changed our media?

Haven’t watched the Bible Miniseries yet? Catch it on History Channel Sundays at 8/7 central.

  1. i was just reading about the steubenville rape case, and i was telling God that America is in danger. I’m encouraged by this post. Truly, God is faithful. I’ve been itching to watch this series too! I was watching snippets of it in youtube. 🙂 will pray for your people. 🙂

    • Thea, that was so very sad about that the girl in Steubenville. I know God has a good plan for her life! She must be feeling so horribly violated. 😦 I can’t imagine how sad she must be feeling.

The world is just so crazy. I have many editors in Korea and I used to think it was scary there with the stories they told of rumors of war . . . until we started having so many school and public shootings.

We hear so much about all the evil but I believe that deep down more people are good than bad. If we could all only rise up! I wonder what the world would be like if we all lived our faith LOUD.

Thank you for your prayers! 🙂 You are such an inspiring young woman!

      • yes, it really made me terribly sad that there were even girls who threatened her! the poor thing, she’s already abused, and girls even threatened to kill her. I feel sad for her. but looking at it, the 2 boys are in big trouble. God will deal with them. such a sad season for them. oh wow! scary in Korea! never been there! you are an inspiration for me too! your blogs have been very very encouraging! 🙂 praying for your ministry to grow more and more! 🙂 happy resurrection sunday!

      • I didn’t know the full story of the young girl but bless her heart! I hope they are getting her some counseling. Yes. Korea’s situation is very scary! I hope they square away whatever the issues are soon. The man in leadership seems out of control and that’s always a scary situation when there is power involved. Thank you for your kind words, Thea! Happy Resurrection day to you too!

  2. God bless everybody in need and my family and your family’s happy Easter everone 🙂
