Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Matthew 5:6 NIV
Have any of you caught the Bible Miniseries yet? It is FABULOUS and it has become an instant hit much to the surprise of Hollywood. This brings back to mind The Passion of the Christ. A New York Times reporter printed this in a 2003 critique “I can’t imagine it being anything other than a flop in America.”
Then it surpassed the Lord of the Rings!
If you have been watching your TV guide you probably notice that the miniseries has jump-skipped History Channel and has been appearing on channels like WE TV and even Lifetime!
It is so clear that America is HUNGRY for God! People want to know who Jesus was. They want to SEE Him for themselves. If Jesus “sells” why are there so many rated R movies out there – Especially when records have proven that G movies sell far better?
My friends Leah and Karen are BIG Duck Dynasty fans. The family featured ends every show with a prayer around the table. They are very openly Christian and make no apologies for it.
So often we are compared to Sodom and Gomorrah, but wouldn’t it make more sense that we are a Nineveh in disguise? God longs for His people to know Him intimately. People always talk about how far we have strayed from God . . . but when presented with the opportunity to “go tell Nineveh”, just like Jonah, the world sits on its hands. It was Einstein who said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”
Jonah had the “too far gone” mentality. Is the mentality that America has today? God wanted the people to remember Him. He went as far as to put Jonah inside the whale! And even still, Jonah was NOT happy about telling people who God was. Was He too proud . . . or perhaps too comfortable? I think the latter had a lot to do with it.
We all know how the story ends. Jonah goes. Nineveh listens. They were, just as God predicted, hungry for Him after all. The people changed. It is one of the most retold stories of redemption the whole world over.
Look at the commercials on your television right now. Movies like Spring Breakers and the like of it . . . we say this is our reality. But if Nineveh’s reality could be changed by ONE man . . . what could we do together? I think we could change a lot. I think our reality would look a lot differently. Our children might be safer. Our world might be more peaceful. Our hearts might be more at rest.
What do you think? Could we change the world if we only changed our media?
Haven’t watched the Bible Miniseries yet? Catch it on History Channel Sundays at 8/7 central.
